WORCESTER, Mass.- The Bears of Coast Guard (5-2, 1-0 NEWMAC) earned a clean 9-0 sweep of Clark (2-6, 0-1 NEWMAC) from the Corash Tennis Courts on Saturday. Despite being shut out, Clark had several close matches, including all three doubles matches and No. 1 singles.
Doubles
• At No. 3 doubles first-years Ryan Hovey and Aidan Hurtado competed in their first-ever NEWMAC match, and lost 8-4 in a match that never seemed out of reach.
• No. 2 doubles would have an identical 8-4 score, with Clark's pair of junior Sam Pomann and sophomore Tanner Honnef staying close before being finished off at the end.
• No. 1 doubles would be the closest match of the day. Graduate student Chris Rübens and junior Dariy Vykhodtsev traded games back and forth with Coast Guard, and even though the scarlet and white lost 8-6, the match showed just how much promise Clark's No, 1 doubles team has this NEWMAC season.
Singles
• Pomann, Hurtado, and first-year Adrian Ramirez could only manage to snag a single game off of their opponents at No. 4, 5, and 6 singles.
• Hovey avoided shut-out sets in his 6-1, 6-1 defeat at No. 3 singles, while Honnef found initial success in his 6-3, 6-0 loss at No. 2, the highest Honnef has played in a NEWMAC match.
• At No. 1 singles Vykhodtsev had the most success for Clark. After losing a 6-2 opening set, the second set saw the junior raise his level and go step for step with Coast Guard. While Vykhodtsev eventually fell 7-5, the comeback and energy in the second set will surely give the power hitter some confidence going into the rest of the NEWMAC season.
What's Next
Clark will play host to Babson for a NEWMAC matchup on Tuesday. That match begins at 3 p.m. at the Corash Tennis Courts.
