Box Score 2 LYNN, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (10-5, 1-1 NEWMAC) opened conference play with a series split against Emerson (8-8, 1-1 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon from Fraser Field.
Clark won game one 2-1 and fell 10-3 in game two.
Game One: Clark 2, Emerson 1
- Graduate student Chris Radovic reached first on a hit by pitch in the top of the first inning, but was left on base and junior Benjamin Spencer took the bump for Clark and allowed no runs in the bottom of the first.
- Sophomore Samuel Farrell singled to center in the top of the third to advance fellow sophomore Billy Sullivan to second base before the Lions got out of the jam.
- Spencer hurled another scoreless inning in the bottom of the third and graduate student Trevor Ham hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth that scored senior Zachary Gitschier as Clark took a 1-0 lead.
- Spencer got out of a first and second, no out jam in the bottom of the fourth by retiring the next three batters and again tossed a scoreless fifth inning.
- Ham hit his second sacrifice fly of the game in the top of the sixth that again scored Gitschier to go up 2-0.
- First-year Matthew Kalinak and Radovic each stole bases in the top of the seventh, but didn't score and Spencer pitched his seventh straight shutout inning.
- Emerson scored a run in the bottom of the eighth and Spencer closed out the game in the ninth with the second out coming on a caught stealing from sophomore Anthony LoCasto and Spencer got Emerson to ground out as Clark won 2-1.
Game Two: Emerson 10, Clark 3
- Gitschier hit a ball in the top of the first inning that gave Clark a 1-0 lead when junior Connor Rulnick came around to score.
- Junior Max Moss took the bump in game two and retired the side in both the bottom of the first and second inning.
- Sullivan came around to score Clark's second run of the game in the top of the third to take a 2-0 advantage and Emerson scored in the bottom of the third to make it a 2-1 game.
- Emerson gained the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs and junior Ethan Belt drove in first-year Carter Doran as Clark tied the game at 3-3.
- The Lions scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh and won game two 10-3.
What's Next
Clark will return to the field on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Wheaton for a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 p.m.
