Conners Nets Eight Goals in Overtime Loss to Smith

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University women's lacrosse team (2-10, 0-7 NEWMAC) battled for over 60 minutes with Smith (7-7, 3-4 NEWMAC), but fell 16-15 in overtime in a thrilling conference contest on Wednesday night from Granger Field.   

How it Happened

  • Sophomore Claudia Oakleaf gave Clark an early 1-0 lead and right after a Smith goal, first-year Aubrey Conners gave the Cougars the lead back at 2-1 with 10:19 left in the first quarter.
  • Oakleaf and Conners combined to score two of the next three goals in the game as Clark led 4-2.
  • Conners and fellow first-year Meghan Fogarty scored two more goals as the Cougars went on a 4-0 run to push the advantage to 6-2 and Clark led 6-4 after one quarter of play.
  • After Smith took an 8-6 lead, Conners netted a goal off a feed from fellow first-year Erin Lucas and another Conners goal before the break tied the game at 8-8.
  • Lucas found the back of the net with 10:41 remaining in the third quarter off a nice pass from Oakleaf and a free position goal from Conners tied the game off a free position shot to tie the game again at 10-10.
  • Sophomore Mary Greene and Conners scored Clark's final two goals of the third quarter, including a goal off a Smith turnover with 0:53 left in the third quarter and Smith led 13-12 after three.
  • Fogarty found the back of the net with 13:53 remaining in the fourth off a pass from Lucas to tie the game back up and Conners gave Clark a 14-13 lead with 9:43 to go in the game.
  • Smith scored the games next two goals, but the Cougars answered with a man-up goal from sophomore Jacqueline Faulise off a feed from junior Kiley Simmons to tie the game at 15-15 as the contest went to overtime.
  • The Pioneers netted the game-winning goal in overtime after earning a free position attempt.
