Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (8-7, 0-1 NEWMAC) dropped their conference-opener to WPI (11-3, 1-0 NEWMAC) by a 66-40 margin on Saturday afternoon from the Kneller Gymnasium.
How it Happened
- WPI opened the game with a 7-3 lead with a bucket coming from graduate student Cam Richey and a free throw from junior Alaina Schatzabel before Clark scored five unanswered points with three coming from Richey and two more from Schatzabel to give the Cougars an 8-7 lead.
- Clark ended the quarter on a 7-3 run sparked by three points from senior Jalin Waters and junior Mariah Harris hit a pair of free throws to take a 14-11 lead into the second quarter.
- WPI opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run before Richey made a layup off a steal and a Faulise layup with 2:23 to go in the period brought the Cougars back within two at 20-18.
- Faulise hit a free throw before the half as Clark trailed 25-19 at the half.
- WPI scored the first five points of the third quarter before the Cougars responded with four straight points off points from Schatzabel and Waters in a 30-23 game.
- Faulise hit a three with 5:05 left in the third to get back within five at 31-26 and a Waters triple with 3:54 remaining in the third as the scarlet and white trailed 36-29.
- After the Engineers scored the final seven points of the third, first-year Ashley Leighton hit a pair of free throws to get back within 12 at 43-31.
- WPI then scored nine unanswered points to go up 52-31 with 7:39 left in the fourth and four Cougars scored down the stretch with buckets coming from senior Sarah Zambrano, Schatzabel, Harris, and Leighton as the Engineers won 66-40.
