Women's Basketball Falls to Coast Guard on Wednesday

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Clark women's basketball team (9-10, 0-4 NEWMAC) traveled to Coast Guard (9-9, 2-2 NEWMAC) in a NEWMAC clash and fell to the Bears 96-67 on Wednesday night from Roland Hall.

How it Happened

  • The Bears held an early 8-6 lead despite four points from junior Alaina Schatzabel and a made jumper from graduate student Cam Richey, but Coast Guard then scored 11 unanswered points to take a 19-6 lead with 5:24 left in the first.
  • Senior Jalin Waters ended the run with a made three-pointer and a pair of layups from Schatzabel brought Clark back within 10 at 23-13.
  • Faulise hit a three-pointer with 2:37 remaining in the first to get back within eight and a layup from sophomore Megan Swedberg got Clark as close as five at 26-21, but the Bears ended the first on an 8-2 run to take a 34-23 lead into the second.
  • Coast Guard opened the second on a 12-2 run, with the Cougars bucket coming from Schatzabel to take a 46-25 lead before junior Mariah Harris, senior Sarah Zambrano, and Richey each hit shots to make it a 46-31 game.
  • Zambrano scored Clark's final bucket of the first half with 0:29 to go, but again the Bears went on a run to take a 56-33 lead into the break.
  • Richey scored four of Clark's first six points to open the third quarter and a pair of free throws from Schatzabel made it a 67-41 ballgame with 6:06 remaining.
  • Schatzabel scored the Cougars next four points before Faulise added Clark's final seven points of the quarter with a pair of made layups as well as a made three-pointer as the Bears held a 78-54 lead after three quarters.
  • Graduate student Julia Beebe led the way with five points in the fourth and Faulise added four as Clark fell 96-67.

Inside the Box Score

  • Clark grabbed 30 rebounds, dished out 13 assists and forced 14 turnovers.
  • Schatzabel led the way with 17 points and grabbed three rebounds.
  • Faulise added 16 points and three assists.
  • Richey netted 10 points, grabbed six rebounds, and dished out five assists.

What's Next

The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday afternoon with a road NEWMAC contest at Wheaton beginning at 1:00 p.m.
