NEW LONDON, Conn. – The No. 5 Clark University volleyball team (17-13) traveled to No. 4 Coast Guard (19-8) to take on the Bears for the second time in four days and despite taking the second set, fell 3-1 to the Bears on Tuesday night from Roland Hall.
Clark fell 25-12 in the first set, took the second set 25-22, were edged 25-22 in the third set, and dropped the final set 25-16.
How it Happened
- Senior Victoria Pastor and graduate student Cameron Gill each registered kills early in the first set as the Bears led 10-6 and a block from senior Sheyenne Williams and Gill pulled Clark within three at 10-7.
- Senior Sofia Scherrer del Llano added another kill down the stretch of the first set off a feed from first-year Julia Dopazo as the Cougars fell 25-12.
- Pastor, Gill, Williams, and junior Camille Sterling registered kills early in the second set to give Clark a 6-3 edge and a senior Camille Flurry kill from junior Yvanna Torres put the Cougars up 9-7.
- The two teams traded points in the middle of the set as Pastor, Gill, Scherrer del Llano, Williams, and Flurry recorded kills to take a 16-15 edge.
- Scherrer del Llano added two more kills and a Sterling kill at the end of the set tied the match back up as Clark won the second set 25-22.
- Clark jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the third set as Pastor tallied two kills and a block and a block from Flurry and Sterling helped extend the lead to 9-6.
- Pastor and Williams registered kills in the middle of the set as the match was tied 16-16 and Flurry kept it tied with a kill from Torres at 17-17.
- Down 21-18, Clark battled back with kills from Scherrer del Llano and Williams as well as a service ace from Dopazo tied the set at 21-21.
- The Bears took four of the final five points of the set as the Bears took a 25-22 win in the third set.
- The Cougars fell behind 10-2 early in the fourth set despite kills from Pastor and Williams and two unanswered points from Williams and Torres pulled Clark within six at 10-4.
- Pastor added two more kills and a service ace from Dopazo brought the Cougars within four at 14-10.
- The Bears then pulled away despite Scherrer del Llano, Flurry, and Pastor kills as Coast Guard came away with a 25-16 victory in the final set.
Inside the Stats
- The Cougars recorded 40 kills, dished out 38 assists, 11 blocks, and three service aces.
- Pastor led the squad with 11 kills and 13 digs.
- Williams added eight kills and three blocks.
- Dopazo led the team with 19 assists and Torres dished out 16 assists.
- Liu registered a team-leading 31 assists.
