Second Half Rally Guides Springfield Past Women's Basketball

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark women's basketball team (9-12, 0-6 NEWMAC) were leading Springfield (14-6, 4-1 NEWMAC) at the half, but were edged by the Pride 69-46 on Wednesday night from the Kneller Gymnasium.

How it Happened

  • The game was tied 6-6 with 4:50 left in the first as the scarlet and white got baskets from junior Jacqueline Faulise, junior Alaina Schatzabel, and senior Jalin Waters.
  • Faulise scored Clark's next six points to help the Cougars end the quarter on an 8-3 run with the other bucket coming off a jumper from senior Sarah Zambrano as Clark led 14-9 after one.
  • After the Pride got within two, junior Mariah Harris made a layup off a feed from Schatzabel and a Faulise layup with 6:59 remaining in the second extended the Clark lead to 18-12.
  • Springfield then went on an 8-1 run over the next three minutes before Schatzabel made a layup off a pass from Faulise to regain the lead at 21-20 and a Harris free throw as well as Faulise triple extended the advantage to 25-20 with 2:08 to go in the second.
  • Harris hit a three right before the half as Clark entered the locker room with a 28-24 lead.
  • Out of the half, Faulise made a layup and Waters hit a three-pointer off a feed from Faulise to extend the lead to 33-25, but Springfield responded by scoring the contests next 10 points to take a 35-33 lead.
  • Faulise hit a three with 2:24 left in the third to give Clark the lead back, but the Pride ended the third on an 11-2 run with the Cougar bucket coming from first-year Ashley Leighton as Springfield took a 46-38 lead into the fourth.
  • After Springfield pushed the lead to 15, Waters hit a three with 6:14 to go to get Clark back within 12 and a free throw from graduate student Cam Richey made it a 55-44 game.
  • Richey scored Clark's final points of the game with a made layup as the Cougars fell 69-46 to the Pride.

Inside the Box Score

  • Clark grabbed 34 rebounds, dished out 12 assists and forced 17 turnovers.
  • Faulise netted a team-high 18 points and dished out four assists.
  • Schatzabel grabbed a team-leading 11 rebounds and scored five points.
  • Waters scored eight points and pulled down four rebounds.

What's Next

The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday as they host their senior day game against Mount Holyoke beginning at 3:00 p.m.
