Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team's (0-1) opened the 2023 season with a non-conference contest against Salve Regina (1-0) and fell 4-0 to the Seahawks on Saturday afternoon from Granger Field.
How It Happened
- Senior Benjamin Spencer made his season debut on the mound today and pitched a shutout first inning in which he struck out the final batter and forced a pair of flyouts.
- After a scoreless first, the Seahawks added three runs in the top of the second before Spencer got out of a bases-loaded jam by forcing a pair of flyouts,
- Junior Maxwell Gitlin came into pitch in the third inning for Clark and retired the side in order before Salve added a run in the top of the fourth to extend the lead to 4-0.
- Junior Samuel Farrell tripled down the left field line with one out in the bottom of the fourth for Clark's first hit of the year, but was left on third after a pair of Cougars were retired.
- After two innings in which Gitlin didn't allow a baserunner, the junior struck out a Shane Williams with a runner on second to keep the score tied in the top of the seventh.
- Sophomore CJ Johnson recorded Clark's second hit of the year in the bottom of the seventh, but was left on base and senior Anthony Keefe got a hit in the bottom of the eighth and was also left on base.
- Senior Max Moss made his season debut on the mound and got out of a jam in which the Seahawks had runners on second and third before Moss got Williams to fly out to left.
- Clark was retired in order in the bottom of the ninth as the Seahawks came away with a 4-0 win.
Inside the Stats
- Gitlin pitched 6.0 innings, only allowed two hits, struck out six batters, and allowed no earned runs.
- Farrell hit his first triple of the year.
- Keefe and Johnson also got hits for Clark in the contest.

Clark will be back in action on Sunday, February 26 when they welcome Elms to Granger for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
