Baseball Splits Two-Game Series With Keene State on Friday

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (7-6) split today's doubleheader against Keene State (5-8) as they dropped game one and won game two on Friday afternoon from Granger Field.

Game One: Keene State 5, Clark 2 (F/7)

  • Senior Benjamin Spencer pitched a scoreless top of the first before senior Anthony Keefe and first-year Brayden Hollinrake each registered hits in the first inning, but were unable to score in a 0-0 game after one inning of play.
  • After the Owls took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, graduate student Andrea Casabianca belted a double to left center and senior Ethan Belt drew a walk, but again the Cougars couldn't plate any runs.
  • After a scoreless third inning, the Owls added a run in the fourth before Casabianca hit a double to center field to get into scoring position before the Cougars were set down to end the fourth.
  • Keene State added two runs in the top of the fifth and in the bottom of the sixth, before Hollinrake belted an RBI double that plated senior Ryan Caulfield and first-year Michael Soares brought Hollinrake home to make it a 4-2 contest in the bottom of the sixth.
  • The Cougars were unable to add another run in the seventh as the fell 5-2.
  • Hollinrake went 2-3 with a pair of doubles and drove in a run.
  • Casabianca also had two doubles in the contest.
  • Carterud pitched 2.1 innings in relief and only allowed one run.

Game Two: Clark 11, Keene State 1 (F/7)

  • Junior Maxwell Gitlin took the bump for Clark in game two and retired the side in order in the top of the first.
  • Keefe gave Clark the lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI singled to left that scored Farrell and Hollinrake hit a sacrifice fly that plated Keefe to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
  • After another scoreless inning from Gitlin, Farrell singled to left to drive in sophomore CJ Johnson and push the advantage to 3-0.
  • Gitlin struck out the side in the top of the third and Clark scored four runs in the bottom of the third as sophomore Tyler Jones singled to center field to plate Hollinrake and Johnson belted a three-run homer as Clark took a 7-0 lead.
  • Caulfield extended the lead to 8-0 in the fourth inning with a single up the middle that plated Farrell.
  • Gitlin carried a perfect game through six innings and in the bottom of the sixth, Farrell scored on a wild pitch, senior Connor Rulnick singled to left to drive in Keefe, and Jones hit into a fielder's choice that scored Caulfield to push the edge to 11-0.
  • The Owls broke up the perfect game in the bottom of the seventh and scored a run before Gitlin struck out the final two batters looking to earn an 11-1 win.
  • Farrell went 4-4 with a double, a stolen base, and three runs scored.
  • Caulfield finished 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
  • Johnson belted a three-run homer in the game.
  • Jones added a pair of RBI's.
  • Gitlin tossed 7.0 innings, only allowed two hits, and struck out nine batters.

What's Next

Clark will be back in action on Sunday with a home game against Worcester State beginning at 12:00 p.m.
