Baseball Edged by St. Joe's (Me.) on Thursday

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (13-13) closed out their season series against St. Joe's (Me.) (11-15) and dropped the non-conference contest 15-14 on Thursday afternoon from Granger Field.

How it Happened

  • After the Monks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, senior Connor Rulnick belted a three-run homer to right field that plated junior Samuel Farrell and senior Ryan Caulfield.
  • St. Joe's (Me.) scored six runs in the top of the second and another two in the top of the third before Clark answered with three runs of their own as junior Anthony LoCasto doubled down the left field line to score sophomore Carter Doran and first-year Dom Mariani singled to left, driving in LoCasto and Rulnick.
  • The Monk offense added four more runs in the top of the fourth, but Farrell doubled to left field scoring Caulfield and making it a 14-7 game.
  • Senior Jose Mencia came in to pitch for Clark in the top of the fifth and tossed three scoreless innings as the Cougars were able to score three runs during that timeframe as Doran hit an inside the park home run to left center that scored Caulfield and LoCasto came around to score on a wild pitch.
  • St. Joe's pushed the lead to 15-10 before Clark added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth as graduate student Steven Mooney belted an RBI double to left center, first-year Nicolo Mainardi recorded an RBI, and senior Ethan Belt scored on a wild pitch to make it a 15-13 contest.
  • Senior Nate Bonini tossed a scoreless ninth and in the bottom of the ninth, Rulnick scored on a wild pitch and first-year Jake Faulkenham reached second, but the Monks recorded the final two outs of the game to come away with a 15-14 win.

Inside the Stats

  • Rulnick went 4-5 with a homer, four runs scored, and three RBI's.
  • Doran drove in two runs and also scored a pair of runs.
  • Farrell drew three walks, drove in a run, and scored a run.
  • Mencia tossed three scoreless innings.

What's Next

Clark will return to the diamond tomorrow with a road NEWMAC game at Coast Guard beginning at 3:30 p.m.
