Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (14-17, 5-6 NEWMAC) opened a three-game series against Springfield (11-15-1, 5-6 NEWMAC) and fell 7-5 in extra innings to the Pride on Friday afternoon from Granger Field.
How it Happened
- Senior Benjamin Spencer took the bump for Clark and retired the side in order in the top of the first and in the bottom half, the Cougars loaded the bases as graduate student Andrea Casabianca, senior Connor Rulnick, and sophomore Tyler Jones were each on base, but were unable to score.
- Spencer tossed another scoreless second and in the bottom of the second, junior Billy Sullivan and senior Ryan Caulfield each reached base before being left on.
- Both teams went down in order in the third and fourth innings before the Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth as Sullivan walked, stole second, advanced to third, and scored on a single through the right side by Caulfield.
- Springfield broke up Spencer's no-hitter in the top of the sixth and in the bottom of the inning, junior Samuel Farrell converted a suicide squeeze to plate Jones as the Cougars pushed the lead to 2-0.
- Spencer got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh and in the bottom of the seventh, Jones belted a three-RBI double to left center, scoring Rulnick, Casabianca, and Caulfield to extend the advantage to 5-0.
- The Pride tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the eighth and in the bottom half of the inning, first-year Brayden Hollinrake and Sullivan each singled, but were unable to score.
- Senior Michael Carterud struck out the side in the top of the ninth and Doran reached base in the bottom of the ninth and reached third before the Pride got out of the jam.
- In the top of the 10th, Springfield scored two runs and Clark was unable to match as the Pride won 7-5.
Inside the Stats
- Jones went 3-5 with a double, a triple, and three RBI's.
- Caulfield also was 3-5 with an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base.
- Spencer tossed 7.0 shutout innings, struck out four batters, and only allowed four hits.

The Cougars will return to action tomorrow with a NEWMAC doubleheader at Springfield beginning at 12:00 p.m.
