Baseball Clinches West Division With 3-2 Win Over WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (18-19, 9-8 NEWMAC) earned the No. 2 overall seed and won their division with a 3-2 victory over WPI (16-22, 5-12 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon from Fitton Field on the campus of Holy Cross.

No. 2 Clark is set to be the second seed in the NEWMAC Tournament and will await when they are playing at the end of the NEWMAC regular season.

How it Happened

  • Senior Ryan Caulfield, stole second, and came around to score on a wild pitch to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
  • Junior Heath Cockburn took the mound for Clark and got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the first and in the top of the second, graduate student Steven Mooney hit a sacrifice fly that plated senior Anthony Keefe to go up 2-0.
  • The Engineers added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 2-2 and after a scoreless third, sophomore Tyler Jones singled and reached second base before being caught stealing.
  • Mooney singled and stole second in the top of the fifth before junior Andres Hulfachor entered the game on the bump in the bottom of the fifth and didn't allow a hit.
  • Sophomore Carter Doran doubled to left center in the top of the sixth, but was left on base and Hulfachor tossed a scoreless bottom of the sixth.
  • Caulfield gave Clark a 3-2 lead with an RBI single to right field that plated Keefe in the top of the seventh.
  • The Cougars loaded the bases in the top of the eighth as sophomore CJ Johnson, Jones, and Mooney each reached base, but the Engineers were able to get out of the inning.
  • Hulfachor didn't allow a hit in either the eighth or the ninth as the Cougars recorded a 3-2 victory.

Inside the Stats

  • Hulfachor tossed 5.0 scoreless innings, struck out seven batters, and didn't allow a hit.
  • Cockburn only allowed one earned run across 4.0 innings pitched,
  • Cauflield went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Keefe was 2-4 with a pair of runs scored.
  • Mooney also drove in a run and drew a walk.
