Box Score 2 CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (13-10, 4-1 NEWMAC) traveled to MIT (8-10, 3-2 NEWMAC) on Saturday and came away with a sweep of the Engineers winning game one 8-5 and game two 7-5 from Fran O'Brien Field.
Game One: Clark 8, MIT 5
- Clark opened the game with four runs in the top of the first as sophomore CJ Johnson belted a grand slam to left field that plated sophomore Carter Doran, junior Samuel Farrell, and junior Billy Sullivan to go up 4-0.
- Senior Benjamin Spencer took the bump for the Cougars in game one and tossed a scoreless first before Sullivan scored on a passed ball in the top of the second to extend Clark's lead to 5-0.
- The Engineers fought back to tie the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth and in the top of the fifth, Clark regained the lead with an RBI single to right field from Doran that scored Farrell.
- Senior Max Moss tossed a scoreless fifth and sixth inning before the Cougars added another run in the top of the seventh as graduate student Andrea Casabianca singled to drive in Farrell and make it a 7-5 game.
- Moss closed the door with a pair of 1-2-3 innings in the bottom of the eighth and ninth and Doran belted a homer to left field as Clark came away with an 8-5 win.
- Moss tossed five scoreless innings, only allowed two hits, and struck out four batters.
- Doran went 2-4 with a homer, two runs scored, and two RBI's.
- Farrell was 2-4 with three runs scored and a stolen base.
- Johnson drove in four runs with a grand slam.
Game Two: Clark 7, MIT 5
- The Cougars opened game two with a pair of runs scored as first-year Brayden Hollinrake singled and drove in Farrell and senior Ryan Caulfield to give Clark a 2-0 edge.
- Junior Maxwell Gitlin tossed a scoreless first inning before the Engineers were able to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second.
- After a scoreless third and fourth innings pitched by Gitlin, Farrell scored on a wild pitch after tripling to right field to give Clark a 3-2 edge.
- Gitlin set the Engineers down in order in the bottom of the sixth before Hollinrake drove in two more runs in the top of the seventh with a single to right field that plated Caulfield and Sullivan to make it a 5-2 contest.
- MIT got back within two in the bottom of the seventh and in the bottom of the eight, junior Andres Hulfachor tossed a 1-2-3 inning to keep it a 5-3 game.
- Doran belted a two-run homer to left field in the top of the ninth that scored Farrell to make it a 7-3 contest.
- After an Engineer homer and a pair of runners reached base, senior Michael Carterud entered the game and earned the save as Clark came away with a 7-5 win.
- Hollinrake went 2-5 with four RBI's.
- Farrell was 2-4 with three runs scored and a triple.
- Doran belted a two-run homer, drew a pair of walks, and scored a run.
- Gitlin went 7.0 innings, struck out six batters, and only allowed three runs.
What's Next
The Cougars will be back in action on Monday afternoon with a road contest at Worcester State beginning at 3:30 p.m.
