Volleyball Falls to Springfield in Five Set Thriller

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University volleyball team (7-6, 1-2 NEWMAC) hosted their second consecutive NEWMAC game when they welcomed Springfield (8-4, 2-1 NEWMAC) on Tuesday night from the Kneller Gymnasium.

Clark fell 25-14 in the first set, won the second set 25-23, the Cougars took the third set 25-23, dropped the third set 25-19, and were edged 15-8 in the deciding set.

How it Happened
  • The Cougars and Pride split the first six points of the match as senior Camille Sterling recorded a kill off a feed from senior Yvanna Torres and after Springfield took a 10-6 edge, Clark rallied with four straight points from sophomore Harper Chinn and a graduate student Camille Flurry kill to tie the set at 10-10.
  • Graduate student Sofia Scherrer del Llano and first-year Isabella Alcott each tallied kills to give Clark a 12-11 lead before the Pride ended the set on a 14-2 run as they took the set 25-14.
  • The Cougars took an 8-7 lead early in the second set sparked by kills from Scherrer del Llano, Sterling, graduate student Victoria Pastor, and a block from sophomore Winifred Gakidis before the Pride rattled off three straight points to go up 10-8.
  • Clark responded with four straight points of their own as Flurry recorded a kill and a block and the Cougars led by as many as three in the set off another kill from Flurry.
  • The scarlet and white held a 19-16 edge and closed the set out with six points capped off by a Pastor kill from Torres as Clark took the set 25-23.
  • The Cougars and Pride traded points throughout the third set as Scherrer del Llano, Pastor, Flurry, and first-year Isabella Alcott each recorded kills before a Pastor kill gave Clark a 12-10 edge.
  • Pastor added two more kills and a service ace from Torres helped the Cougars maintain a two-point lead at 18-16 in the third set.
  • Alcott paced the Cougars in the remainder of the set with three kills and Scherrer del Llano added a pair of kills as the scarlet and white took the set 25-23.
  • Clark jumped out to an early 6-2 edge sparked by a kill from Scherrer del Llano, block from Alcott/Sterling, and a service ace from Scherrer del Llano.
  • Pastor recorded a pair of kills in the middle of the set and after the Pride took a 15-12 lead in the fourth before Pastor and Gakidis added kills to take a 16-15 edge.
  • Pastor added two more kills before the end of the set and Dopazo tallied a kill before the end of the set as Clark dropped the set 25-19.
  • Sterling, Pastor, and Flurry each recorded kills in the deciding fifth set, but the Pride took the match 15-8.
Inside the Box Score
  • Clark recorded 44 kills, three aces, eight blocks, 43 assists, and 62 digs.
  • Pastor led the team with 17 kills and added 16 digs.
  • Scherrer del Llano added nine kills and 15 digs.
  • Torres (24) and Dopazo (16) led the squad in assists.
  • Sterling led the way with five combined blocks and added four kills.
  • Liu tallied a team-leading 18 digs.

Clark will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Salve Regina for matches against the Seahawks (11:00 a.m.) and Endicott (1:00 p.m.).
