No.4 Volleyball Edged by No. 5 Babson in NEWMAC Quarterfinals

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University volleyball team (14-12) hosted their first NEWMAC Tournament game since 2016 and despite taking the first set against Babson (23-6) the Beavers dropped the match 3-1 on Tuesday night from the Kneller Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • The Cougars jumped out to an early 8-4 lead as senior Camille Sterling and senior Emily Newman as well as blocks from graduate student Victoria Pastor, first-year Isabella Alcott, and graduate student Camille Flurry, with the Beaver points coming off kills from Hailey Fouche, Lauren Gips, and Isabella Allen.
  • Graduate student Sofia Scherrer del Llano helped give Clark a 12-11 edge off a feed from senior Yvanna Torres and in the middle of the set Newman and Flurry combined for a block as the Cougars held a 16-13 advantage despite another Allen kill.
  • Down 19-18, the Cougars ended the set on a 7-4 run as sophomore Harper Chinn recorded an ace and Clark got kills from Alcott, Scherrer del Llano, and Pastor as the team came back to win the set 25-23.
  • Babson held an 8-3 edge in the second set as Fouche, Gips, and Allen recorded kills before Newman helped the Cougars pull back within three at 8-5 off a feed from Torres.
  • Scherrer del Llano tallied a pair of kills and Gips added three more kills in the middle of the set as the Beavers led 15-10 before a kill from Pastor helped spark three unanswered to pull Clark within three at 15-13.
  • Flurry registered a block and a kill down the stretch, but Babson ended the frame on a 10-4 run as the Beavers recorded three kills, a service ace, and a block to win the set 25-17.
  • Babson led 8-6 to open the third set as Gips and Zoe Ackerman tallied kills and Pastor recorded Clark's first three kills of the set.
  • Torres registered a service ace and Scherrer del Llano recorded a kill off a pass from Torres to help the Cougars get back within one at 12-11 and a Sterling kill made it a 14-12 contest.
  • Down 19-15, Clark rattled off four straight points on kills from Flurry, Sterling, and Alcott to tie the set at 19-19 before Babson ended the frame on a 6-4 run led by two kills from Gips to win 25-23.
  • The Cougars jumped out to 7-6 lead in the fourth set as Torres, Scherrer del Llano, and Pastor each registered kills and a Flurry kill helped extend Clark's advantage in the frame.
  • Scherrer del Llano, Pastor, and Flurry all recorded kills in the middle of the set as the Cougars held an 18-16 edge and a Pastor kill gave Clark its biggest lead of the set at 20-17.
  • Despite holding a 24-21 lead, the Beavers ended the match on a 6-1 despite a Pastor kill as Allen recorded three kills and Fouche closed the door with a kill as Babson won the set 27-25.
Inside the Stats
  • Clark recorded 41 kills, nine aces, seven blocks, 40 assists, and 70 digs.
  • Pastor led the team with 16 kills and is now fourth all-time in kills with 1,059.
  • Scherrer del Llano tallied nine kills and 13 digs.
  • Flurry registered a team-leading five blocks and seven kills.
  • Torres led the squad in both assists with 20 and digs with 18, while finishing her career fifth all-time in assists.
  • Liu added 17 digs and a team-high three service aces.
