Men's Basketball Overpowers Salve Regina in NEWMAC Home Opener, 91-80

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University men's basketball team (5-3, 2-0 NEWMAC) extended their winning streak to four games as they won their NEWMAC home opener 91-80 over Salve Regina (3-6, 0-2 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon from the Kneller Gymnasium.

How it Happened
  • Salve Regina jumped out to an early 7-2 lead as four starters scored for the Seahawks before junior Reid Neumann and senior Bruce Saintilus combined to score the next five points of the game to tie the contest at 7-7.
  • After six straight Seahawk points, first-year Boluwasefe John made a layup off a feed from sophomore Quentin Pridgen and a three-pointer from senior Ian Calabrese pulled the Cougars back within two at 16-14.
  • First-year Kyle Squires and senior Kekoa McArdle scored Clark's next five points and after Salve led 22-19, the Cougars scored 11 unanswered points as Calabrese, graduate student Jordan Richard, and Saintilus all connected on three-pointers as the scarlet and white possessed a 30-22 advantage with 7:26 remaining in the first half.
  • Neumann then connected on a pair of three-pointers off passes from McArdle to help extend the lead to 12 and before the end of the half, Saintilus hit two three's and John buried a triple as the Cougars took a 49-37 lead into the break.
  • Clark opened the second half on an 8-2 run as Richard and Neumann each hit three-pointers before a layup from Saintilus pushed the Cougars lead to 59-43.
  • After Salve pulled back within 10, John slammed home a dunk off a feed from Pridgen before Anthony DeThomas made a layup to bring the Seahawks within eight at 65-57.
  • The scarlet and white then went on a 12-0 run with four made three-pointers as both Calabrese and Richard connected on triples as Clark held a 77-57 edge with 8:01 to play.
  • Richard and Saintilus combined to score the Cougars next five points before a layup from sophomore Christopher Clarke helped Clark hold an 86-71 lead with 4:26 remaining.
  • The Cougars held the Seahawks to just nine points down the stretch and made free throws from both Saintilus and Neumann helped seal a 91-80 victory. 
Inside the Box Score
  • The Cougars shot 50.8 percent from the floor, grabbed 29 rebounds, made 18 three-pointers, dished out a season-high 25 assists, and recorded 12 steals.
  • Saintilus led the team with 24 points on 8-12 shooting and tallied eight assists.
  • Richard buried five three-pointers as the graduate student tallied 15 points.
  • Neumann (14) and Calabrese (14) also reached double-figures in the contest.
  • Pridgen recorded six points, six assists, and five rebounds.
What's Next
The Cougars will return to the court on Sunday, December 29 when they welcome No. 16 Tufts to the Kneller for a contest beginning at 3:00 p.m.
