Baseball Falls 15-7 to WNE on Tuesday

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (9-1) returned home from Florida to take on Western New England (3-3) in the team's pride game and fell 15-7 in their first game of the week on Tuesday afternoon from Granger Field.

How it Happened
  • WNE jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Clark answered with four runs in the bottom of the first as sophomore Michael Soares roped a two-RBI double down the left field line, junior Tyler Jones earned a walk to drive in a run, and senior Billy Sullivan singled to short to bring home senior Samuel Farrell as the Cougars 4-2 after one inning of play.
  • The Golden Bears plated four runs in the top of the second to take a 6-4 lead and in the bottom of the second, Clark loaded the bases as junior Carter Doran, Soares, and sophomore Brayden Hollinrake all reached base with one out, but WNE got out of the jam to keep a 6-4 edge.
  • After WNE scored two more runs in the top of the third, sophomore Dom Mariani singled to right field to plate Jones as the Cougars trailed 8-5 after three innings of play.
  • First-year Brendan Bruun tossed a scoreless top of the fourth and in the bottom of the inning, Soares doubled and Hollinrake walked before WNE set down the next three batters.
  • The Golden Bears plated a run in the top of the fifth and in the top of the sixth to go up 10-5 before Farrell cut the deficit to four at 10-6 with a homer to left field in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Senior Cory Giannelli struck out the side in the top of the seventh and in the bottom of the inning, Sullivan walked, stole second, stole third, and came around to score on a throwing error by the pitcher as Clark trailed 10-7.
  • The Golden Bears belted a three-run homer in the top of the eighth and added another run to go up 14-7 before plating another in the top of the ninth to take a 15-7 advantage.
Inside the Stats
  • Mariani tallied a career-high five hits, scored a run, and drove in a run.
  • Soares added three hits, two RBI's, and a pair of doubles.
  • Sullivan recorded two hits and stole two bases.
  • Farrell hit his first homer of the season and scored a pair of runs.
What's Next
Clark will be back in action on Friday afternoon with a home game against Mass. Maritime beginning at 3:00 p.m.
