Baseball Rallies Late to Top Mass. Maritime 10-8

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (10-1) rallied late in the game to come away with a 10-8 victory over Mass. Maritime (2-5) on Friday afternoon from Granger Field.

How it Happened
  • Mass. Maritime jumped out to an early 1-0 lead and after a scoreless second inning pitched by graduate student Casey Gorczyca, senior Samuel Farrell doubled to right field, but was left on base.
  • After two Mass. Maritime runs in the top of the third, senior Billy Sullivan and junior Carter Doran each drove in runs with hits as Clark trailed 3-2 after three innings of action.
  • The Buccaneers added two runs in the top of the fourth and after a scoreless fifth inning from Gorczyca, sophomore Dom Mariani singled up the middle to plate Sullivan as Mass. Maritime led 5-3.
  • Trailing 6-3, Clark scored four runs as junior Ryan Bonja recorded an RBI single, junior Tyler Jones brought home Bonja, and Mariani brought home Sullivan as the Cougars took a 7-6 lead.
  • First-year Brandon Berean allowed no runs in the top of the seventh and in the bottom of the inning, sophomore Michael Soares and senior Samuel Farrell each hit homers to give Clark a 10-6 advantage.
  • Graduate student Benjamin Spencer came in and closed the door with two innings pitched and struck out a pair of batters as the Cougars came away with a 10-8 victory.  
Inside the Stats
  • Farrell recorded a pair of hits as he roped a double and belted a homer while also driving in and scoring two runs.
  • Sullivan added three hits, three runs, and a stolen base.
  • Mariani tallied three hits and two RBI's.
  • Hollinrake registered two hits and scored two runs.
  • Berean tossed two innings, allowed one run, and earned his first career win.
What's Next
The Cougars will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader against Keene State beginning at 12:00 p.m.
