Baseball Sweeps Keene State on Saturday Afternoon

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (12-1) welcomed Keene State (4-7) to Granger for a Saturday doubleheader and came away a pair of victories over the Owls.

Game One: Clark 4, Keene State 3
  • Senior Maxwell Gitlin took the mound for the Cougars in game one and after the Owls plated a run, Gitlin picked off a runner at second base to end the top of the inning.
  • In the bottom of the first, graduate student Ryan Caulfield, sophomore Dom Mariani, and junior Carter Doran all scored, with Doran scoring off an RBI ground out from sophomore Brayden Hollinrake as Clark led 3-1.
  • The Owls added another run in the top of the second and after a scoreless third from Gitlin, Doran was hit by a pitch, stole second, and advanced to third on a balk before Keene State got out of the inning.
  • After the Owls tied the game at 3-3, Clark added a run as Hollinrake drew a walk to bring home Mariani to give the Cougars a 4-3 edge.
  • Gitlin shut the door on the Owls with a scoreless sixth and seventh inning on the mound, including throwing out Ahlers on a suicide squeeze attempt as Clark prevailed 4-3.
Game Two: Clark 7, Keene State 5
  • The Owls jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before Caulfield came around to score off an error by the first baseman as the Cougars made it a 2-1 game in the bottom of the first.
  • After Keene State added another run in the second and a scoreless third from sophomore Tommy Flaherty Clark plated four runs in the bottom of the third as Doran recorded a two-RBI single, first-year Michael Salzillo hit a sacrifice fly, and junior Tyler Jones brought home sophomore Michael Soares to take a 5-3 lead.
  • The Owls added another run in the top of the fourth before Clark's offense responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth as senior Billy Sullivan roped a double to deep center field that scored Jones and Salzillo as the Cougars took a 7-4 advantage.
  • Junior Gavin Belt came in and tossed a scoreless sixth inning and recorded two outs in the seventh before graduate student Benjamin Spencer came into the game and recorded the final out as Clark came away with a 7-5 victory.
What's Next
Clark will close out a four-game homestand on Wednesday afternoon when they welcome Lesley to Granger for a non-conference game beginning at 3:00 p.m.
