Baseball Opens Spring Break With 7-3 Win Against Fontbonne

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Clark University baseball team (3-0) opened their spring break trip with a 7-3 victory over Fontbonne (4-5) on Saturday morning from Northeast Regional Park.

How it Happened
  • Senior Maxwell Gitlin pitched a scoreless first inning and in the bottom of the first, junior Carter Doran and sophomore Brayden Hollinrake each drove in sophomore Dom Mariani and Doran as Clark took a 2-0 lead.
  • After Gitlin tossed a scoreless second and third inning, before Mariani singled and stole second in the bottom of the third before Fontbonne got out of the jam.
  • Fontbonne plated a run in the top of the fourth and after a scoreless fifth, graduate student Ryan Caulfield singled to left, stole second and reached third before the Griffins got out of the inning.
  • Fontbonne scored two runs in the top of the sixth before Clark responded as senior Billy Sullivan drove in a run and Caulfield singled to right, driving in junior Tyler Jones and Hollinrake as the Cougars took a 5-3 lead.
  • Gitlin pitched a scoreless seventh and graduate student Benjamin Spencer came in to pitch a scoreless eighth.
  • Mariani registered an RBI double and sophomore Michael Soares drove in Mariani with a single through the left side to give the Cougars a 7-3 lead after eight innings of play.
  • Spencer earned the save with a scoreless ninth as Clark came away with a 7-3 win.
Inside the Stats
  • Gitlin tossed 7.0 innings, struck out six batters, and only allowed one run.
  • Caulfield recorded a pair of hits and drove in two runs.
  • Soares registered three hits through the left side, scored a run, and drove in a run.
  • Doran, Mariani, Hollinrake, and Sullivan also recorded RBI's.
What's Next
Clark will return to the field tomorrow afternoon when they take on Bethany for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
