Baseball Sweeps Bethany on Sunday Night

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Clark University baseball team (5-0) extended their winning streak to five games with a pair of victories over Bethany (1-4) on Sunday night from Northeast Regional Park.

Game One: Clark 8, Bethany 4
  • Sophomore Tommy Flaherty retired the side in order in the top of the first and in the bottom of the inning, junior Carter Doran roped a double that drove in graduate student Ryan Caulfield and doubles from sophomores Brayden Hollinrake and Nicolo Mainardi each drove in runs as Clark led 3-0.
  • After a run by the Bison in the top of the second, sophomore Dom Mariani belted an RBI double to center to drive in senior Billy Sullivan to go up 4-1.
  • Bethany hit a three-run homer in the top of the third to tie the game at 4-4 and in the bottom of the third, Hollinrake belted a homer to left field to regain a 5-4 edge.
  • After two scoreless Flaherty innings, Mariani and Hollinrake each reached base, but the Bison got out of the jam.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Caulfield belted an RBI double to drive in Sullivan, Doran hit an RBI single, and Mariani scored after Doran lasted long enough in the pickle as Clark led 8-4.
  • Junior Gavin Belt made his first appearance of the season on the bump in the top of the seventh and pitched a scoreless inning as the Cougars won 8-4.
Game Two: Clark 13, Bethany 2
  • Graduate student Casey Gorczyca took the bump for Clark in game two and retired the side in order in the first before the Cougars plated seven runs in the top of the second as Sullivan roped a triple to left center that drove in three runs, Caulfield, Doran, and Mainardi each doubled in a run, Doran came around to score as the scarlet and white led 7-0.
  • Gorczyca tossed a scoreless second before the Bison added a run in the bottom of the third and in the top of the fourth, Doran scored on a passed ball as the Cougars extended the lead to 8-1.
  • The Cougars plated two runs as first-year Michael Salzillo doubled down the left field line that scored Sullivan and came around to score as Clark led 10-1 through five and a half innings.
  • In the top of the sixth, junior Tyler Jones hit a sacrifice fly to center field and first-year Chas Caron drove in junior Sean Borden to go up 12-2.
  • Graduate student Jose Mencia tossed a scoreless bottom of the sixth and sophomore Jake Faulkenham scored in the top of the seventh to give the Cougars 13-2 lead.
  • First-year Brandon Berean pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh as the Cougars won 13-2.
What's Next
The Cougars will return to the field on Wednesday morning when they take on Saint Vincent College beginning at 9:45 a.m.
