Baseball Registers Two-Game Sweep Against St. Joe's (Me.)

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (15-2) swept St. Joe's (3-10) in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon from Granger Field. The Cougars won game one 17-9 and topped the Monks 3-1 in game two.

Game One: Clark 17, St. Joe's (Me.) 9
  • Sophomore Tommy Flaherty pitched a scoreless top of the first and in the bottom of the inning, the Cougars plated six runs as junior Carter Doran, sophomore Michael Soares, and sophomore Brayden Hollinrake each recorded RBI's and senior Samuel Farrell scored on a passed ball as Clark held a 6-0 lead.
  • After the Monks plated two runs in the top of the second, Soares hit a sacrifice fly and sophomore Dom Mariani scored as the Cougars held an 8-2 lead after two innings of play.
  • Flaherty only allowed one run in the top of the third and tossed a scoreless top of the fourth inning before Clark's offense exploded for eight runs as Farrell, junior Tyler Jones, graduate student Ryan Caulfield, and Mariani all recorded RBI's as the Cougars took a commanding 16-3 lead.
  • Flaherty tossed a scoreless fifth and graduate student Jose Mencia recorded a scoreless sixth before sophomore Jake O'Donnell recorded an RBI single as Clark came away with a 17-9 win in game one.
Game Two: Clark 3, St. Joe's (Me.) 1
  • Graduate student Casey Gorczyca took the mound for Clark in game two and after retiring the side in order in the top of the first inning, sophomore Michael Soares doubled to left field that plated Mariani to give the Cougars a 1-0 edge.
  • Gorczyca allowed no hits in both the second and third innings before also tossing a scoreless fourth with three forced fielder's choices.
  • After first-year Michael Salzillo doubled to left, junior Ryan Bonja belted a two-run homer to left field to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
  • St. Joe's added a run in the top of the fifth, but Gorczyca pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh as Clark recorded a 3-1 victory.
What's Next
Clark will open NEWMAC play on Tuesday afternoon when they welcome Emerson to Granger beginning at 3:00 p.m.
