WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University softball team (4-8) competed against crosstown foe Worcester State (7-6) on Tuesday afternoon from WPI Rooftop Field and fell to the Lancers in both games.
Game One: Worcester State 8, Clark 1
- First-year Megan Dube took the bump for Clark in game one and tossed a scoreless first two innings before sophomore Magdalena Barthel singled to drive in graduate student Reilly Bronson to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
- The Lancers plated five runs in the top of the third and after two runs in the top of the sixth, seniors Samantha Crowley and Rebecca Mauro each reached base, but were left on base.
- Sophomore Erin Slavin walked and stole a pair of bases in the bottom of the seventh before the Lancers came away with an 8-1 win.
Game Two: Worcester State 9, Clark 5
- Sophomore Keira Langus allowed no runs in the top of the first before the Cougars plated two runs in the bottom of the inning as sophomore Barthel and sophomore Madison Dillon each recorded RBI's to give Clark a 2-0 lead.
- After another scoreless inning from Langus, Crowley put a ball in play that played first-year Charlise Quigley as the Cougars took a 3-0 edge.
- The Lancers plated a run in the bottom of the third and after Langus set down Worcester State in the top of the fourth, sophomore Emelie Spence and Barthel each reached base before the inning ended with a pop out to second.
- Worcester State took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth and added a run in the top of the sixth before Clark rallied with RBI's from Mauro and Barthel tied the game at 5-5 heading into the seventh.
- The Lancers plated four runs in the top of the seventh to go up 9-5 and held the Cougars scoreless to win 9-5.
What's Next
The Cougars are slated to open NEWMAC play on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Wellesley for contests beginning at 12:00 p.m.
