Baseball Drops NEWMAC Doubleheader to Coast Guard

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (16-5, 1-2 NEWMAC) hosted Coast Guard (10-5, 2-0 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon from Granger Field and dropped both games to the Bears.

Game One: Coast Guard 16, Clark 8
  • Sophomore Tommy Flaherty tossed a scoreless first inning and in the bottom of the frame, sophomore Dom Mariani belted a two-run homer to left field and junior Carter Doran homered as Clark took a commanding 3-0 lead.
  • The Bears plated five runs in both the top of the second and top of the third and in the bottom of the fourth, junior Ryan Bonja belted a homer to left field to pull Clark within six at 10-4.
  • After another run from the Bears, Clark plated three runs as sophomore Michael Soares hit a sacrifice fly, Bonja registered an RBI single, and junior Tyler Jones singled in a run as Coast Guard led 11-7.
  • First-year Jacob Kline tossed a scoreless seventh inning after Soares recorded an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth as the Cougars fell 16-8.
Game Two: Coast Guard 12, Clark 4
  • Graduate student Casey Gorczyca took the bump for Clark in game two and tossed a scoreless first inning and after the Bears scored a run in the second, sophomore Brayden Hollinrake doubled to left field, but was left on base.
  • Coast Guard scored three runs in the top of the third, graduate student Benjamin Spencer tossed a scoreless fourth inning before the Bears added four more runs in the top of the fifth.
  • Clark got on the board with a run in the bottom of the sixth as graduate student Ryan Caulfield hit a sacrifice fly to left field that plated senior Billy Sullivan as Clark trailed 8-1.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Caulfield recorded an RBI single and Doran belted an RBI double to right center that scored Mariani and Sullivan.
What's Next
The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to the NEBC for a road NEWMAC contest against Emerson beginning at 3:30 p.m.
