Baseball Extends Winning Streak to Seven Games With 12-1 Win Over Gordon

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Clark University baseball team (7-0) extended their winning streak to seven games and pushed their streak of 12 plus runs to three games as they came away with a 12-1 victory in seven innings over Gordon (1-7) on Friday morning from Northeast Regional Park.

How it Happened
  • Clark jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as sophomore Michael Soares singled up the middle to drive in fellow sophomore Dom Mariani.
  • Graduate student Casey Gorczyca took the bump for Clark and retired the side in the bottom of the first before senior Billy Sullivan drove in a run with a suicide squeeze that brough home first-year Michael Salzillo as the Cougars took a 2-0 edge.
  • After another scoreless inning from Gorczyca, the Cougars plated three runs as Salzillo hit a sacrifice fly, junior Carter Doran scored on a passed ball, and Soares scored on a wild pitch as Clark held a 5-0 lead.
  • The scarlet and white scored two more runs in the top of the fourth as Doran drove in graduate student Ryan Caulfield and Soares singled to left center to drive in Doran to take a 7-0 advantage.
  • After Gordon plated a run in the bottom of the fourth, Mariani doubled, which plated junior Tyler Jones, Doran recorded an RBI single, and Soares also logged an RBI single as Clark led 10-1.
  • Senior Corey Giannelli relieved Gorczyca in the bottom of the sixth as Gorczyca tossed 5.0 innings and only allowed one run and Giannelli pitched a scoreless inning.
  • In the top of the seventh, Doran belted a two-run homer to left field that scored Mariani to go up 12-1 and in the bottom of the inning, first-year Jacob Kline allowed no runs as Clark won 12-1.
Inside the Stats
  • Doran was 3-4, with four RBI's, four runs, two stolen bases, and a homer.
  • Soares went 4-4 with three RBI's, a run scored, and a stolen base.
  • Mariani also tallied three hits and added four runs.
  • Gorczyca tossed 5.0 innings, struck out four batters, and only allowed one run.
What's Next
The Cougars will close out their Florida trip with a doubleheader tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. against UMass Dartmouth.
