Softball Drops Series Against Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Clark University softball team (5-15, 0-6 NEWMAC) battled with Coast Guard (6-10, 5-1 NEWMAC) for a pair of games, but dropped both from Nitchman Field on Wednesday afternoon.  

Game One: Coast Guard 14, Clark 6
  • The Cougars jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as sophomore Magdalena Barthel registered a two-RBI single that plated senior Rebecca Mauro and first-year Charlise Quigley.
  • The Bears scored five in the bottom of the first and in the bottom of the second, sophomore Keira Langus retired Coast Guard in order.
  • In the top of the third, sophomore Felicia Salvati drew a walk with two outs, but was left on base before Clark plated four runs in the top of the fifth as Salvati, Barthel, and sophomore Sydney Lyons each registered RBI's as the Cougars trailed 12-6.
  • First-year Alexis Taudel singled in the top of the sixth before being left on base and after being left on base, the Bears scored two runs to win 14-6.
Game Two: Coast Guard 5, Clark 4
  • The Bears scored one run in the bottom of the first before sophomore Brooke Buzzeo tossed a scoreless second inning.
  • Senior Samantha Crowley tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third with a single to center field that plated sophomore Emelie Spence.
  • After another scoreless inning from Buzzeo, senior Rebecca Mauro scored on a passed ball to give the Cougars a 2-1 edge.
  • Buzzeo shut Coast Guard down in the fourth inning before the Bears took the lead with three runs in the fifth.
  • Clark rallied back with two runs in the sixth as Salvati and sophomore Madison Dillon each recorded RBI's to tie the game at 4-4 in the sixth inning.
  • Spence singled and stole second in the top of the seventh, but was unable to score and in the bottom of the seventh the Bears scored as Clark fell 5-4.
What's Next
The Cougars will return to action on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader against Salve Regina beginning at 12:00 p.m.
