Baseball Edged by Wheaton in NEWMAC Doubleheader

NORTON, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (17-11, 2-7 NEWMAC) traveled to Wheaton (14-6, 8-1 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader and were edged in both games by the Lyons from Sidell Stadium.

Game One: Wheaton 6, Clark 5
  • Graduate student Ryan Caulfield singled to second base to start the game and in the bottom of the first, fellow graduate student Benjamin Spencer allowed no runs as the contest remained tied at 0-0.
  • Spencer shut down the Lyons in the second and third inning and despite a double from junior Carter Doran, Wheaton was able to get out of the top half of the fourth without allowing a run.
  • After Wheaton plated a run in the bottom of the fourth, Clark took the lead in the top of the fifth as senior Billy Sullivan and Caulfield each recorded RBI's to help give the Cougars a 2-1 edge.
  • Wheaton added four runs in the bottom of the fifth and after sophomore Tommy Flaherty shut down the Lyons in the bottom of the sixth, Clark scored three runs as junior Ryan Bonja recorded a two-RBI single and fellow junior Tyler Jones doubled as the game was tied 5-5.
  • The Lyons regained a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the seventh and Clark was unable to get a hit in the eighth or ninth as they fell by that score.
Game Two: Wheaton 12, Clark 9
  • Caulfield, Doran, and Jones each reached base in the top of the first, but Wheaton got out of the jam and in the bottom half of the inning, first-year Brendan Bruun allowed no runs to keep it a scoreless game.
  • The Lyons plated two runs in the bottom of the second and bottom of the third to go up 4-0 before Clark got a run back in the top of the fifth when Caulfield registered an RBI that scored sophomore Brayden Hollinrake as the Cougars trailed 4-1.
  • After Bruun tossed a scoreless fifth, Clark roared back to take a 5-4 lead as sophomore Nicolo Mainardi, Hollinrake, Sullivan, and Caulfield each recorded RBI's.
  • The Lyons responded with five runs in the bottom of the sixth and despite Bonja doubling to left and reaching third, Wheaton got out of the inning.
