SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (20-12, 4-8 NEWMAC) recorded their second NEWMAC sweep of the year as they took both games against Springfield (14-16, 1-9 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon.
Game One: Clark 5, Springfield 0
- Graduate student Benjamin Spencer pitched a scoreless first inning before Clark scored in the top of the second when sophomore Brayden Hollinrake singled to drive in junior Tyler Jones and go up 1-0.
- After Spencer tossed a scoreless second, third, fourth, and fifth inning, junior Ryan Bonja belted an RBI double that plated junior Carter Doran to take a 2-0 lead.
- Clark added three more runs in the top of the eighth as Bonja roped a double to center, sophomore Michael Soares hit a sacrifice fly, and Hollinrake recorded an RBI single as the Cougars led 5-0.
- Sophomore Tommy Flaherty came in to relieve the seven inning shutout from Spencer and closed the door on the Pride with two shutout innings as they won 5-0 in game one.
Game Two: Clark 11, Springfield 0 (F/7)
- Clark jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as Bonja belted a three-run homer that scored Doran and senior Billy Sullivan.
- Senior Maxwell Gitlin retired the side in order in the bottom of the first and in the top of the second, senior Samuel Farrell scored off an error to go up 4-0.
- Soares belted a three-run homer in the top of the third that plated Jones and Doran to extend the lead to 7-0.
- Gitlin tossed another scoreless inning in the third and in the top of the fourth, Doran recorded an RBI single and Jones hit a two-RBI double to left field as Clark led 10-0.
- After two more scoreless innings from Gitlin, Jones recorded another RBI with a double to right field as the Cougars extended the lead to 11-0.
- Gitlin shut the door on Springfield in the sixth and seventh as he pitched a complete game shutout to win 11-0.

The Cougars will travel to Nichols for a road non-conference contest against the Bison beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon.
