WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (20-13, 4-9 NEWMAC) hosted their first game of the week against WPI (18-12-1, 6-5 NEWMAC) on Tuesday afternoon from Granger Field and fell 7-4 to the Engineers.
How it Happened
- WPI jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after a two-run homer from Burns and an RBI double from Merrick before graduate student Ryan Caulfield drew a walk and stole second, but was caught stealing at third to end the inning.
- Graduate student Casey Gorczyca pitched a scoreless top of the second inning before the Engineers plated two runs as Merrick and Zawacki each recorded RBI's in the top of the third.
- Senior Samuel Farrell drew a walk in the bottom of the third, but was left on base and in the top of the fourth, first-year Brendan Bruun retired the side in order.
- Senior Billy Sullivan drew a walk in the bottom of the fourth and stole second before being left on base and in the top of the fifth, Bruun set the Engineers down in order again.
- Junior Tyler Jones recorded the Cougars first hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth and reached second on a passed ball, but Cash threw Jones out from right field trying to reach third.
- Bruun pitched another scoreless inning in the top of the sixth and in the bottom of the inning, Caulfield drew a walk, but was left on base.
- Cash belted a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to take a 7-0 lead before sophomore Matthew Donahue finished the inning with no more added runs and in the top of the eighth, sophomore Tommy Flaherty got out of a bases loaded jam.
- Clark loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth as sophomore Michael Soares singled and Farrell/Caulfield both walked and the Cougars plated four runs as Sullivan drove in a run, Bonja hit a two-RBI single, and Doran scored on a wild pitch to make it a 7-4 game.
- Flaherty threw a scoreless ninth inning and in the bottom of the ninth, the Engineers recorded three straight outs as Clark fell 7-4.
