WORCESTER, Mass. – No. 4 Clark men's tennis team (12-5) took on No, 5 Springfield (4-12) in the NEWMAC Quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon from the Mount Holyoke Tennis Courts and came away with a convincing 5-1 win over the Pride.
This marked the Cougars first NEWMAC Tournament win since 2014-15 when they beat Wheaton. The scarlet and white will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they take on No. 1 MIT beginning at 12:00 p.m.
How it Happened
Doubles: Clark 2, Springfield 1
- Sophomore Edward Shepherd-Johnson and first-year Aris Kirkorian took on Tatsuya Kimoto and Marc Villanueva Abad in number one doubles and came away with a convincing 8-1 victory.
- In number two doubles, senior Tanner Honnef and junior Ryan Hovey competed against Tim Norin and Waseem Sablon and recorded an 8-3 win.
- Sophomore Graham Russo and first-year Adham Seraj battled with Phakin Thongbooncharoen and Ethan Gomulka in number three doubles, but despite winning six games, the Cougars tandem fell 8-6.
Singles: Clark 3, Springfield 0
- In number four singles, Russo gave Clark a 3-1 edge as he topped Sablon 6-0, 6-2.
- Kirkorian took on Villanueva in number two play and extended the lead to 4-1 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
- Hovey closed the match for the Cougars with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Gomulka.
- Kimoto held a 6-4, 0-1 lead over Shepherd-Johnson (No. 2), Honnef (No. 3) trailed 2-6, 4-3 to Thongbooncharoen, and Taub held a 7-5, 1-4 edge on Seraj (No. 6).

The scarlet and white will travel to No. 1 MIT for a NEWMAC Semifinal match beginning at 12:00 p.m. from the DuPont Tennis Courts.
