WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University softball team (6-24, 1-13 NEWMAC) welcomed WPI (19-12-1, 10-4 NEWMAC) to O'Brien Field for the first two games of a four-game weekend homestand on Friday afternoon and were edged by the Engineers in both games.
Game One: WPI 9, Clark 8
- First-year Megan Dube took the mound for Clark in game one and retired the side in order in the top of the first before senior Samantha Crowley scored off an error in the bottom of the first to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
- Dube tossed another scoreless inning in the second and despite sophomore Madison Dillon reaching third base with one out, the Engineers were able to get out of the inning.
- WPI plated four runs in the top of the third and one in the top of the fifth before Clark scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore Emelie Spence, senior Rebecca Mauro, and sophomore Felicia Salvati each drove in runs to give the Cougars a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
- The Engineers added four runs in the top of the sixth and in the bottom of the seventh, Salvati and sophomore Alyssa Briggs each recorded RBI's to get back within a run, but WPI got out of a jam to come away with a 9-8 win.
Game Two: WPI 3, Clark 2
- The Engineers scored two runs in the top of the first innings off an error and in the bottom of the first, Spence singled and moved up to third base before WPI got out of the inning.
- Sophomore Brooke Buzzeo pitched a scoreless second inning before WPI scored a run in the top of the third.
- Buzzeo allowed no runs in the fourth and fifth inning before Clark scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth as Spence and Mauro each recorded RBI's to cut the deficit to 3-2.
- After another scoreless inning from Buzzeo, Briggs reached third base after starting the inning off with a single, but was left on base.
- In the bottom of the seventh, WPI retired the side in order to come away with a 3-2 win.
What's Next
The scarlet and white will return to the field tomorrow afternoon when they welcome Springfield to O'Brien for their senior day games against the Pride beginning at 12:00 p.m.
