Softball Falls to Springfield on Senior Day

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University softball team (6-26, 1-15 NEWMAC) hosted Springfield (25-7-1, 12-4 NEWMAC) for their senior day game and battled with the Pride for 14 innings, but fell in both games on Saturday afternoon from O'Brien Field.  

Prior to the game, seniors Rebecca Mauro and Samantha Crowley and graduate student Reilly Bronson were honored for their contributions to Clark softball.

Game One: Springfield 5, Clark 3
  • The Pride jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first before the Cougars cut the lead in half with an RBI double from sophomore Magdalena Barthel that scored Crowley.
  • First-year Megan Dube allowed no runs in the top of the second and in the bottom of the second, Crowley singled to center field to score first-year Charlise Quigley to tie the game at 2-2.
  • After a scoreless third inning, the Pride scored two runs in the top of the fourth and in the bottom of the fifth, Quigley scored on a passed ball as Clark trailed 4-3.
  • The Pride scored another run in the top of the seventh and in the bottom of the seventh, Quigley and Crowley each singled, but were left on base as Clark fell 5-3.
Game Two: Springfield 5, Clark 1
  • Sophomore Brooke Buzzeo allowed no runs in the top of the first and in the bottom of the inning, Mauro doubled to right center, but was left on base.
  • Buzzeo tossed another scoreless second inning and after sophomore Felicia Salvati and sophomore Erin Slavin both singled, the Pride got out of the inning.
  • Buzzeo got out of a pair of jams in the third and fourth inning before Springfield hit a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth as Clark trailed 3-0.
  • Crowley recorded an RBI single to right field that scored Quigley to make it a 3-1 game.
  • After the Pride scored a run in both the sixth and seventh inning, Barthel singled in the bottom of the seventh, but was unable to score as Clark dropped game two 5-1.
What's Next
The scarlet and white will return to the field on Friday afternoon for a road NEWMAC doubleheader at Babson beginning at 2:00 p.m.
