Baseball Drops Non-Conference Doubleheader at Tufts

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (20-16) traveled to Tufts (19-14) for their final two non-conference games of the year against the Jumbos and fell in both games on Saturday afternoon from Sol Gittleman Park.

Game One: Tufts 3, Clark 0
  • Junior Carter Doran opened the game with a single in the top of the first before being left on base and in the bottom of the inning, sophomore Tommy Flaherty allowed no runs.
  • Tufts scored two runs in the bottom of the second and Doran recorded his second hit of the game in the top of the fourth before the Jumbos got out of the inning.
  • Senior Benjmain Spencer tossed a scoreless sixth inning and after a scoreless seventh from senior Cory Giannelli, senior Anthony LoCasto singled in the top of the eighth.
  • In the top of the ninth, graduate student Ryan Caulfield, sophomore Dom Mariani, and junior Ryan Bonja each reached base, but the Jumbos recorded the final out of the game to come away with a 3-0 win.
Game Two: Tufts 6, Clark 2
  • Sophomore Michael Soares took the mound in game two and tossed a scoreless first and second inning before the Jumbos scored a run in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 edge.
  • First-year Brendan Bruun allowed no runs in the bottom of the fifth after getting out of a bases loaded jam and with Clark trailing 4-0 in the top of the seventh, the Cougars scored two runs as first-year Michael Salzillo drove in sophomore Brayden Hollinrake and Doran to cut the deficit to 4-2.
  • Senior Billy Sullivan singled and reached second on a wild pitch, but was left on base and in the top of the ninth, Hollinrake and sophomore James Webster each singled before Tufts recorded the final out of the game to win 6-2.
What's Next
Clark will return to the field on Tuesday night when they travel to the NEBC for a road NEWMAC game against WPI beginning at 7:00 p.m.
