Offense Explodes in Baseball's 16-3 Victory Over WPI

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (21-16, 5-9 NEWMAC) played WPI (19-13-1, 7-7 NEWMAC) in their final road game of the season and used a 10-run third inning to come away with a 16-3 win over the Engineers in seven innings from the New England Baseball Complex.

How it Happened
  • Sophomore Brayden Hollinrake and first-year Michael Salzillo each drove in runs in the top of the first to give Clark an early 2-0 lead.
  • WPI scored a run in both the first and second inning before the Cougars scored 10 runs in the top of the third as Hollinrake belted a two-run homer to left field, graduate student Ryan Caulfield drove in a pair of runs, sophomore Dom Mariani tallied two RBI's, and Salzillo scored on a wild pitch to take a 12-2 advantage.
  • Senior Maxwell Gitlin tossed a scoreless third inning and in the top of the fourth, Clark scored four runs as junior Carter Doran doubled home two runs, sophomore Michael Soares, and Hollinrake also recorded RBI's as the Cougars took a 16-2 lead.
  • Graduate student Benjamin Spencer pitched a scoreless fourth, sophomore Matthew Donahue allowed no runs in the fifth, senior Cory Giannelli and first-year Brendan Bruun also allowed no earned runs in their innings pitched to close the game.
Inside the Stats
  • Hollinrake led the team with three hits, a home run, and five RBI's.
  • Caulfield added three hits, three runs, two RBI's, and a double.
  • Mariani, Doran, and Soares each drove in two runs.
  • Gitlin earned the win with 3.0 innings pitched and striking out four batters.
What's Next
Clark will be back in action on Saturday afternoon for their home senior day doubleheader against MIT beginning at 12:00 p.m.
