BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (17-7, 2-4 NEWMAC) traveled to Babson (13-6, 6-0 NEWMAC) for a weekend doubleheader against the Beavers and fell in two close games on Saturday afternoon from Govoni Field.
Game One: Babson 2, Clark 1
- Sophomore Dom Mariani reached base in the top of the first with a walk, but was unable to score and after allowing a runner to get to third base in the bottom of the first, graduate student Benjamin Spencer got out of the jam.
- Neither team had a runner reach base in the second inning and in the top of the third, junior Tyler Jones singled and stole second base before being left on.
- Spencer tossed another scoreless third, fourth, and fifth as first-year Michael Salzillo recorded Clark's hit in that frame as the pitcher's duel remained tied at 0-0.
- Clark took a 1-0 edge in the top of the sixth as senior Billy Sullivan scored off a sacrifice fly from graduate student Ryan Caulfield.
- The Beavers tied the game in the bottom of the sixth at 1-1 and in the bottom of the seventh, Spencer got out of a second and third jam.
- Sophomore Tommy Flaherty entered the game in the bottom of the eighth and allowed 0 runs, but in the bottom of the ninth, the Beavers plated a run to win 2-1.
Game Two: Babson 4, Clark 0
- The Beavers scored a run in the bottom of the first inning and two in the bottom of the second before Jones reached base in the third for Clark, but was left on base.
- First-year Brendan Bruun allowed no runs in the third, fourth, and fifth inning and in the fifth inning, junior Ryan Bonja roped a one-out double, but was unable to come around to score.
- In the sixth, Mariani reached third before the Beavers got the final out of the inning and in the eighth, both Caulfield and Jones reached base, but were left on.
- The Beavers closed the game in the ninth with three straight outs to win 4-0.
What's Next
Clark will return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon when they welcome Salve Regina to the Kneller for a NEWMAC game beginning at 3:30 p.m. from Granger Field.
