NORTON, Mass. – The Clark University softball team (5-13, 0-4 NEWMAC) traveled to Wheaton (12-9, 6-0 NEWMAC) for their second NEWMAC series of the year and were edged by the Lyons in both games on Sunday afternoon from the Clark Softball Field.
Game One: Wheaton 3, Clark 0
- Wheaton jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and in the bottom of the first, senior Samantha Crowley and sophomore Felicia Salvati each drew walks, but Sofia Knopf got out of the jam.
- First-year Megan Dube tossed a scoreless second and third as she forced four Lyon runners to be left on base.
- After the Lyons plated their third run of the game, sophomore Magdalena Bartel recorded a single up the middle before Knopf got out of the inning.
- Sophomore Keira Langus came into the game in relief in the top of the fifth and got out of a bases loaded jam to keep the deficit at three.
- Sophomore Erin Slavin singled in the bottom of the fifth and the Cougars got a runner to second off a sacrifice bunt from first-year Charlise Quigley, but the Lyons got out of the inning.
- Langus tossed a scoreless sixth and seventh inning, but Knopf set the Cougars down in order in both innings as Wheaton won 3-0.
Game Two: Wheaton 5, Clark 2
- Sophomore Brooke Buzzeo took the mound for Clark in game two and tossed a scoreless first and second inning.
- Crowley added a bunt single and reached second base on a wild pitch before the Lyons were able to get out of the first inning.
- The Lyons scored three runs between the third and fourth inning before sophomore Erin Slavin singled to left field to get on base.
- Wheaton added another run in the top of the sixth and in the bottom of the sixth, senior Rebecca Mauro belted a two-RBI double to left field that plated Quigley and sophomore Emelie Spence as they trailed 4-2.
- After the Lyons scored a run in the top of the seventh, sophomore Madison Dillon singled, but was unable to score as Wheaton came away with a 5-2 win in game two.
What's Next
The Cougars will return to the field on Wednesday afternoon with a road NEWMAC doubleheader against Coast Guard beginning at 3:00 p.m.
