Iscandari Shines as Men's Basketball Come Up Just Short vs. #25 Saint Joseph (Conn)

WORCESTER, Mass.– Clark University men's basketball (1-1) hosted the No. 25 University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) (1-2) in their home opener. The Cougars and Blue Jays traded blows in a back-and-forth contest featuring 14 lead changes, but USJ pulled away late to take a 79-75 win.

How it Happened

  • After back-to-back threes to open the game for the Blue Jays, sophomore Kyle Squires knocked down a three to cut the lead in half before a layup by sophomore Boluwasefe John made it a one-point game.

  • Following another Squires three to tie it at 11, junior Quentin Pridgen gave Clark its first lead with a triple of his own, putting the Cougars ahead 14-11.

  • With 11 minutes to play in the half, senior Reid Neumann buried a three to give Clark its largest lead of the half, a seven-point cushion at 26-19.

  • Saint Joseph battled back quickly, taking a 30-28 lead at the nine-minute mark after a steal and layup.

  • The score continued to trade hands over the next few minutes behind a Neumann three and layups from Pridgen and John.

  • First-year Aliaun Iscandari made his mark late in the half, tying the game with a layup at the 1:46 mark before hitting a go-ahead three with 27 seconds left.

  • However, USJ's Lance Altenor drilled a three just before halftime to give the Blue Jays a 45-43 edge at the break.

  • Altenor stayed hot to start the second half, converting an and-one layup to push the USJ lead to 54-45 less than three minutes in.

  • The Cougars clawed back with a Neumann three and an Iscandari layup to cut the deficit to four.

  • Saint Joseph maintained its lead until a three by first-year Trace Clark brought Clark within one with 9:11 remaining.

  • A pair of free throws briefly put the Cougars ahead 63-62, before alternating layups by Altenor and junior Malik Matanmi made it 65-64.

  • Altenor hit a pair of free throws to make it 68-67 USJ with 6:16 to play before junior Emmett Hendry's free throw tied the game seconds later.

  • Altenor then converted another and-one to give the Blue Jays a three-point lead. Iscandari responded with a steal and a dunk, and after a USJ layup, Neumann buried a clutch three to tie things again at 73.

  • Iscandari gave the Cougars their final lead with a layup, but the Blue Jays answered with a basket of their own and sealed the 79-75 win with a strong free-throw shooting down the stretch.
