BIDDEFORD, Me. – The Clark University women's basketball team (5-0) traveled to University of New England (0-2) for a non-conference contest, battled for 40 minutes, and came away a 61-58 victory on Monday night from the Harold Alfond Forum.
How it Happened
- The Cougars and Nor'easters played to an early 8-8 as junior Kailey Rios netted four points and both sophomore Cyriah Coleman and junior Catherine Antwi scored.
- UNE scored the next five points of the game before first-year Atiya Watson hit a pair of free throws and Coleman connected on a three-pointer with 1:42 to go in the quarter to tie the contest at 13-13.
- First-year Karilyn Perez-Guerrero made a layup off a feed from Rios as the scarlet and white trailed 18-15 heading into the second quarter.
- Coleman and junior Emma Drefs scored the first four points of the second quarter before Antwi and junior Mia Mabanag scored, with the Mabanag bucket coming off a feed from senior Kiley Drezek to give the Cougars a 25-23 edge.
- Clark closed the half on a 7-5 run as Drezek and Coleman each made a pair of free throws and Antwi hit a triple as the scarlet and white took a 32-28 lead into the locker room.
- Rios and Drefs combined for the first five points of the third to push the advantage to nine before Coleman, Rios, Antwi, and junior Olivia Shipley all scored to extend the lead to 45-30 with 5:38 to go in the period.
- Mabanag then connected on a triple and Antwi netted three more points before the end of the quarter, with Clark leading by as many as 17 to take a 53-41 edge into the fourth.
- UNE scored the first six points of the fourth before first-year Leilani Benson and Shipley each scored as Clark held a 57-49 advantage.
- After UNE pulled to within two at 57-55 with eight unanswered points before Coleman made a pair of free throws with 0:18 seconds to go as they led 59-55.
- Emily Picher hit a three for the Nor'easters with 0:14 remaining and Clark went back to the line and Coleman hit two more free throws to make it a 61-58 contest.
- Clark's defense forced a pair of missed three-pointers on the final possession of the game as the scarlet and white registered a 61-58 victory.
