Volleyball Closes Out Non-Conference Play with Loss to Union

WORCESTER, Mass. – Clark University volleyball (1-23) hosted Union College (20-8) in both teams' final non-conference matchup of the regular season. The Garnet Chargers pulled away in the first set, rallied late in the second, and carried the momentum through the third to earn a 25-15, 25-22, 25-19 win.

How it Happened

  • The Cougars got off to a quick start, scoring the first four points of the opening set behind a service ace from junior Julia Dopazo and a kill by sophomore Isabella Alcott

  • Union responded with 11 of the next 12 points to take an 11-5 lead.

  • A kill from sophomore Abigail Venis cut the deficit to four, but that's as close as it would get, as the Garnet Chargers pulled away to claim the first set 25-15.

  • The second set was a back-and-forth battle, featuring nine ties before a kill by junior Winifred Gakidis made it 14-14, tying the set for a tenth time.

  • Clark then scored the next three points, highlighted by a service ace from junior Harper Chinn to go up 17-14.

  • Additional kills from Gakidis and back-to-back strikes by Alcott helped fend off a Union run, while a block from junior Katelyn Williams and Venis extended the lead to 21-17 and forced a Garnet Chargers timeout.

  • Union came out strong from the break, winning three straight points to cut the deficit to one before tying the set at 22. Following a Clark timeout, Union completed the comeback, taking the second set 25-22 on a service ace.

  • The third set stayed tight early, with back-to-back service aces from Gakidis knotting the score at 6-6.

  • Union then surged ahead, taking six of the next seven points to force a Clark timeout up 12-7.

  • Gakidis and Chinn recorded kills to narrow the gap, but a six-point Union run stretched the lead to 20-11.

  • The Cougars made one final push, securing five of the next six points capped by another Gakidis kill to make it 21-15.

  • However, the Garnet Chargers closed it out from there, taking the final set 25-19 to complete the sweep.
