Men's Basketball Battle but Fall at Buzzer vs No. 21 Tufts

MEDFORD, Mass.– Clark University men's basketball (6-5) traveled to take on No. 21 nationally ranked Tufts University (10-2) on Wednesday afternoon. Both teams traded the lead multiple times in a back-and-forth battle, but it was the Jumbos who delivered the final blow, winning at the buzzer, 79-77.

How it Happened

  • Despite a dunk by sophomore Boluwasefe John to open the scoring for the Cougars, the Jumbos were able to run out to a 13-7 lead in the first five minutes.

  • Both defenses held solid over the next few minutes, with a layup by sophomore Kyle Squires at the 9:18 mark cutting the deficit to one possession, 14-11.

  • After the lead briefly stretched back out to six, senior Reid Neumann tied the game at 17 behind a make from behind the arc and three makes from the charity stripe.

  • A pair of free throws from first-year Trace Clark gave the Cougars a lead, which would grow to 26-20 off a layup from John with three minutes left in the half.

  • First-year Aliaun Iscandari scored the final seven points of the half for Clark, who entered halftime tied 33-33 after a late triple by Tufts.

  • Both offenses came out firing to start the second. The Cougars were led by threes from Squires and Clark, before a layup by junior Malik Matanmi made it 44-44.

  • Tufts would stretch the lead out to five, but a quick three in response by junior Emmett Hendry cut it to two.

  • Junior Quentin Pridgen got in on the scoring with a layup and a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to three, 68-65, with 5:26 to play.

  • Clark would retake the lead behind a three from Neumann and layups by John and Iscandari. John followed up with another layup and free throw to make it 75-70 with 2:28 remaining.

  • Tufts responded, tying the game at 77 with just 19 seconds left. Scott Gymesi got the ball late, and while his first shot was blocked by Neumann, his second effort was true as he scored at the buzzer to give the Jumbos a 79-77 win.
