Baseball Opens 2025 Season With Sweep Against Chatham

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Clark University baseball team (2-0) opened their 2025 season with a series sweep over Chatham (1-3) on Saturday afternoon from Northeast Regional Park.

Game One: Clark 10, Chatham 3
  • Graduate student Benjamin Spencer got the opening day start for the Cougars on the bump and after conceding a baserunner, forced an inning ending double play.
  • In the bottom of the first, senior Ryan Bonja hit a sacrifice fly that plated fellow senior Carter Doran and junior Dom Mariani registered an RBI single that scored graduate student Billy Sullivan to give Clark a 2-0 advantage.
  • After Chatham plated a run in the top of the second, Sullivan recorded a sacrifice fly that brought home Doran to extend the lead to 3-1 after two innings of play.
  • Chatham tied the game with two runs in the top of the third before junior Michael Soares belted a double to left center that plated graduate student Ryan Caulfield to take a 4-3 lead.
  • After a scoreless fourth from Spencer, Clark's offense exploded for five runs as Bonja poked a two-RBI single through the right side and Mariani, senior Tyler Jones, and sophomore Michael Salzillo all drove in runs to push the advantage to 9-3.
  • First-year Robby Roth made his debut on the mound for the Cougars and tossed a scoreless fifth before Mariani belted an RBI double to right center that scored junior Jake Faulkenham as Clark led 10-3.
  • Roth slammed the door on Chatham with two more shutout innings as the scarlet and white came away with a 10-3 victory.
Game Two: Clark 6, Chatham 3
  • Chatham scored two runs in the first to take an early lead before Clark answered right back with two runs of their own as junior Brayden Hollinrake and junior Alfonso Jalil both drove in runs in the top of the second.
  • Graduate student Casey Gorczyca tossed a scoreless second inning and in the top of the third, Hollinrake plated two more runs as Caulfield and Sullivan both scored to put Clark in front 4-2.
  • After three more scoreless innings from Gorczyca in which the Cougars saw a pair of runners get on base, Clark added to their lead when Sullivan hit a sacrifice fly that scored Jalil to put the scarlet and white up 5-2.
  • In the top of the seventh, Clark plated their sixth run of the game when Mariani scored and junior Tommy Flaherty closed the game out on the bump for the Cougars by striking out four batters.
What's Next
The Cougars will return to the field tomorrow morning when they compete against Wentworth for a doubleheader beginning at 9:30 a.m.
