Baseball Wins Game One in Extras Against Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Clark University baseball team (8-3) traveled to Hartford (6-6) for a non-conference doubleheader and recorded a 14-8 victory in 12 innings in game one and were edged 13-12 in game two on Saturday afternoon.

Game One: Clark 14, Hartford 8 (F/12)
  • Senior Carter Doran singled and reached second after graduate student Billy Sullivan got hit by pitch before the Hawks got out of the inning.
  • First-year Danny Goodman tossed a scoreless first, second, and third before junior Dom Mariani drove in graduate student Ryan Caulfield and senior Tyler Jones belted a two-RBI double to plate junior Michael Soares and Mariani as Clark led 3-0.
  • In the top of the sixth, sophomore Michael Salzillo, Doran, and Sullivan all recorded RBI's as the scarlet and white extended their edge to 6-0.
  • After six runs from Hartford in the bottom of the sixth, Soares and Doran each drove in runs in the top of the seventh to push the lead back to two and in the bottom of the seventh, junior Tommy Flaherty retired the side in order.
  • Hartford scored runs in both the eighth and ninth to tie the game at 8-8 entering extras and after two scoreless innings, the Cougars exploded for six runs as Sullivan, Caulfield, graduate student Anthony LoCasto, and Jones all drove in runs as Clark came away with a 14-8 win.
Game Two: Hartford 13, Clark 12
  • Hartford scored a run in the bottom of the first, junior Brayden Hollinrake scored off an error, Jones and Salzillo also drove in runs as Clark took a 3-1 lead in the top of the second.
  • Senior Connor Schmautz threw a scoreless second before Jones brought home Mariani and Salzillo singled through the right side to plate Jones and Hollinrake as the Cougars held a 6-1 edge.
  • The Hawks scored two runs in the bottom of the third and in the top of the fourth, Mariani belted a two-run homer in the top of the fourth.
  • Hartford pulled to within one in the bottom of the fourth at 8-7 and scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the contest at 8-8.
  • Mariani hit his second homer of the game to open the sixth inning before the Hawks plated four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 13-9 lead.
  • In the top of the ninth, Clark rallied with three runs as LoCasto hit a triple to right center that scored Sullivan and Doran and Caulfield drove in a run, but the Cougars fell 13-12.
What's Next
Clark will return home for a four-game homestand opening with a non-conference contest against Rhode Island College on Tuesday afternoon for a contest beginning at 3:30 p.m.
