Baseball Opens Four-Game Homestand With 8-1 Victory Over RIC

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (10-3) hosted their first of a four-game homestand when RIC (6-4) came to Granger and the Cougars prevailed 6-1 over the Anchormen on Tuesday afternoon.

How it Happened
  • RIC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before senior Ryan Bonja singled to left field, driving home senior Carter Doran to make it a 1-1 contest.
  • Graduate student Benjamin Spencer tossed a scoreless top of the second and third before graduate student Billy Sullivan belted a homer to left field as Clark took a 2-1 edge.
  • Spencer retired the side in order in the fourth and sophomore Jacob Kline tossed a scoreless fifth and sixth before junior Dom Mariani singled through the left side to bring home Sullivan as the Cougars led 3-1.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Sullivan singled up the middle to plate junior Alfonso Jalil and sophomore Michael Salzillo scored to push the advantage to 5-1.
  • Clark added three runs in the bottom of the eighth as Mariani scored on a balk, Doran hit a sacrifice fly to center field, and Sullivan hit a double to right center as Clark led 8-1.
  • First-year Robby Roth shut the door on the Anchormen with a scoreless ninth inning and the Cougars recorded an 8-1 victory.
Inside the Stats
  • Sullivan went 5-5, with three RBI's, a pair of runs scored, a double, a stolen base, and a homer.
  • Mariani, Doran, and Bonja also drove in runs for the Cougars.
  • Doran, Mariani, junior Michael Soares, graduate student Anthony LoCasto, Jalil, and Salzillo also scored runs.
  • Spencer tossed 4.0 innings, struck out two batters, and only allowed one run.
  • Kline also pitched 4.0 innings, only allowed two hits, and no runs.
  • Roth closed the door with a scoreless ninth and struck out two batters.
What's Next
Clark will play their second game of the homestand tomorrow afternoon when they welcome St. Joe's to Granger for a contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
