Bats Explode Late in 11-5 Win Against St. Joe's (Me.)

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (11-3) rallied late in the game with nine runs over the final two innings as the scarlet and white came away with an 11-5 victory over St. Joe's (7-4) on Wednesday afternoon from Granger Field.

How it Happened
  • Graduate student Casey Gorczyca pitched a scoreless first inning and in the bottom of the first, senior Carter Doran and graduate student Billy Sullivan each stole bases before the Monks got out of the inning.
  • Gorczyca tossed scoreless second and thirds before Saint Joe's plated five runs in the top of the fourth to take a 5-0 edge.
  • Senior Connor Schmautz pitched a scoreless top of the fifth before senior Tyler Jones and Doran each scored to cut the deficit to 5-2.
  • After two more scoreless frames from Schmautz, Clark rallied to take a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the seventh as graduate student Ryan Caulfield drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle, first-year Cole Camara scored on a wild pitch, and junior Dom Mariani hit a sacrifice fly.
  • Clark plated five more runs in the bottom of the eighth as Caulfield brought home Doran, Caulfield and Camara scored off an error and graduate student Anthony LoCasto drove in a pair of runs as the Cougars recorded an 11-5 victory.

  • Caulfield drove in three runs, recorded two hits, and scored two runs.
  • Doran scored three runs, stole a pair of bases, and tallied two hits.
  • LoCasto registered a pair of RBI's and belted a double.
  • Sullivan added two hits, a run, and a stolen base.
  • Schmautz tossed four scoreless innings, allowed no hits, and struck out three batters.
  • First-year Robby Roth retired the side in order with three strikeouts in the top of the ninth.

The Cougars will return to the field on Friday afternoon when they welcome Mitchell to Granger for a contest beginning at 3:30 p.m.
