Baseball Tallies 9-7 Victory Over Emerson in NEWMAC Opener

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (12-4, 1-0 NEWMAC) opened NEWMAC play with a 9-7 victory over Emerson (5-8, 0-1 NEWMAC) on Tuesday afternoon from Granger Field.

How it Happened
  • Graduate student Benjamin Spencer retired the side in order in the top of the first before graduate student Ryan Caulfield recorded an RBI that brought home senior Carter Doran to take a 1-0 lead.
  • After a scoreless second, the Lions exploded for six runs before Clark answered in the bottom of the third with five runs as junior Alfonso Jalil drove in two with a double to left field and Doran doubled to left to bring home three runs as the Cougars tied the game 6-6.
  • Junior Tommy Flaherty pitched a scoreless fifth and sixth before graduate student Anthony LoCasto belted a three-run homer that brought home first-year Brad Andreola and junior Dom Mariani as Clark pushed their lead to 9-6.
  • Flaherty tossed a scoreless seventh and eighth before first-year Robby Roth entered the game in the ninth and tallied three outs to earn his first career save as the Cougars prevailed 9-7.
Inside the Stats
  • LoCasto led the way with two hits, including a homer, drove in three runs, and scored twice.
  • Doran also tallied three RBI's, two hits, a triple, a double, and drew a pair of walks.
  • Jalil recorded a pair of hits, two RBI's, a double, and a run scored.
  • Mariani registered three hits and scored two runs.
  • Flaherty tossed four scoreless innings and struck out five batters.
  • Roth recorded a two-inning save and struck out four batters.

The Cougars will travel to Lesley for a non-conference contest against the Lynx tomorrow night beginning at 7:00 p.m.
