WORCESTER, Mass. – The Clark University softball team (7-9, 0-2 NEWMAC) welcomed Wellesley (7-5, 2-0 NEWMAC) for their first conference contests of the year and dropped both contests to the Blue on Friday afternoon from O'Brien Field.
Game One: Wellesley 8, Clark 2
- Brynne Mellady recorded an RBI in the first inning for the Blue with a sacrifice fly before junior Brooke Buzzeo retired the final two batters of the inning to keep the deficit at 1-0.
- Clark tied the game in the bottom of the first when first-year Avery Della Piana belted a double to center field that plated graduate student Rebecca Mauro to tie the game at 1-1.
- The Blue plated four runs in the top of the second and two in the top of the third before Buzzeo posted a scoreless fourth inning for the Cougars.
- After both teams were set down in order in the fourth and fifth innings, Wellesley added another run as Anisa Rodriguez drove in a run to extend the lead to 8-1.
- Della Piana drove in her second run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth with a double to right center that plated first-year Avery Dillon to make it an 8-2 game.
- Junior Caitriona Andre and junior Madison Dillon each reached base in the bottom of the seventh, but Sarah Wicker closed out her complete game by retiring the side as Wellesley took game one 8-2.
Game Two: Wellesley 8, Clark 0 (F/5)
- Alena Mulhern and Charis Chung both scored in the top of the first to put the Blue in front before both Avery Dillon and Della Piana singled in the bottom of the inning, but Wellesley got out of the jam.
- Sophomore Megan Dube retired the side in order in the second, third, and fourth before the Blue plated six runs in the top of the fifth sparked by six base hits.
- Lauren Young closed the door on the Cougars with a scoreless fifth as Wellesley prevailed 8-0.
What's Next
Clark will continue their six-game homestand when they welcome Fitchburg State to O'Brien for a midweek contest against the Falcons beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
