Baseball Edged by Coast Guard in NEWMAC Doubleheader

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Clark University baseball team (13-6, 1-2 NEWMAC) traveled to Coast Guard (11-6, 2-0 NEWMAC) for their first road NEWMAC doubleheader of the year and dropped both games 7-6 to the Bears on Saturday afternoon from Nitchman Field.

Game One: Coast Guard 7, Clark 6 (F/10)
  • Graduate student Benjamin Spencer tossed a scoreless first inning and retired the side in order in the second before sophomore Michael Salzillo became the Cougars first baserunner of the game in the top of the third, but was left on base.
  • The Bears plated a run in the bottom of the third, but Clark answered with a run in the top of the fourth as graduate student Billy Sullivan scored to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Junior Tommy Flaherty retired the side in order in the fourth before Coast Guard scored one run in the bottom of the fifth off an RBI single to take a 2-1 edge.
  • Clark rallied with four runs in the top of the sixth as Doran and Sullivan both scored, while juniors Dom Mariani and Michael Soares belted homers to push the Cougars in front 5-2.
  • The Bears responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the contest at 5-5 and after a scoreless seventh from first-year Robby Roth, graduate student Ryan Caulfield singled to center field to bring home Sullivan as Clark led 6-5.
  • Coast Guard scored a run in the bottom of the eighth and after a scoreless ninth, the teams headed to extra innings.
  • Senior Tyler Jones got hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but the Bears got out of the jam and hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 10th to top Clark 7-6.
Game Two: Coast Guard 7, Clark 6
  • Caulfield opened up the scoring in the second game with an RBI single to left field that brought home Sullivan as Clark led 1-0.
  • Graduate student Casey Gorczyca pitched a scoreless first inning before the Bears plated three runs in the bottom of the second, but Clark answered in the top of the third as Mariani drove in both junior Jake Faulkenham and Doran to tie the game at 3-3.
  • After another scoreless inning from Gorczyca, the Cougars got a pair of runners on base before being retired and Coast Guard capitalized with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-3 edge.
  • Clark got a run back in the top of the sixth as Salzillo drove in first-year Brad Andreola to cut the deficit to 6-4.
  • The Bears plated another run in the sixth and after scoreless innings from first-year Danny Goodman in the seventh and eighth, Mariani roped a double down the left field line to make it a 7-6 ballgame.
  • Coast Guard got out of the jam by forcing a fielder's choice and fly out to left to prevail 7-6.
What's Next
Clark will close out their season series with Emerson on Tuesday afternoon with a contest at the Northborough Baseball Complex beginning at 3:30 p.m.
