Baseball Bested by Emerson

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – The Clark University baseball team (13-7, 1-3 NEWMAC) closed out their season series with a road contest against Emerson (7-10, 1-3 NEWMAC) and fell 12-8 to the Lions on Tuesday afternoon from the Northborough Sports Complex.

How it Happened
  • Emerson jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first off a pair of RBI's before junior Brayden Hollinrake singled through the left side in the top of the second, but the Lions got out of the inning.
  • The Lions plated three runs in the bottom of the second and two runs in the bottom of the third before graduate student Billy Sullivan homered to right field to cut the deficit to 7-1.
  • Junior Alfonso Jalil doubled down the left field line to bring home Hollinrake and junior Michael Soares as Clark added two more runs in the fourth.
  • First-year Robby Roth tossed a scoreless fourth before senior Carter Doran scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth as the Cougars trailed 7-4.
  • In the top of the seventh, Soares recorded an RBI that plated Doran and in the eighth Jalil belted a two-run opposite field homer to right field to tie the game at 7-7.
  • Emerson responded with five runs in the bottom of the eighth and first-year Bennett Hewett tallied an RBI in the ninth for Clark, but the Lions tallied a 12-8 victory.
Inside the Stats
  • Jalil recorded two hits, four RBI's, a run scored, and a homer.
  • Sullivan also hit a homer in the contest.
  • Soares and Hewett tallied RBI's.
  • Doran and Hollinrake each reached base three times.
  • Roth tossed 3.2 scoreless innings, only allowed one hit, and struck out three batters.
What's Next
The Cougars will be back in action tomorrow when they welcome NEC to Granger for a contest beginning at 2:30 p.m.
