Baseball Splits Series Against Pitt-Greensburg in Rain Shortened Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Clark University baseball team (5-2) topped Pitt.-Greensburg (2-7) 22-7 in game one before dropping game two 6-2 in five innings due to weather conditions on Wednesday from Lake Myrtle Park.

Game One: Clark 22, Pitt-Greensburg 7
  • The Panthers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first before senior Carter Doran scored on a balk and graduate student Ryan Caulfield belted a triple to center field to bring around senior Ryan Bonja to bring the Cougars within a run at 3-2.
  • Graduate student Casey Gorczyca tossed a scoreless second inning and in the bottom half of the inning, Doran and graduate student Billy Sullivan both drove in runs to give Clark a 4-3 lead.
  • After another scoreless third from Pitt.-Greensburg, junior Alfonso Jalil singled to left to bring home junior Brayden Hollinrake and after allowing two runs, Sullivan, Bonja, Caulfield, and junior Dom Mariani all scored to take an 8-5 edge.
  • The Panthers cut the deficit to one in the top of the fifth before Clark exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth as Bonja, Caulfield, Mariani, Hollinrake, junior Jake Faulkenham, Jalil, and Doran all recorded RBI's to extend the lead to 15-7.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, six more runs came home for the Cougars as senior Jake O'Donnell, first-year Bennett Hewett, senior Seneca Hillock-Lonstein, and first-year Myles Fournier all drove in runs as Clark pushed the edge to 22-7.
  • Sophomore Jacob Kline closed out his three-inning shutout in relief by allowing no more runs in the top of the seventh as the Cougars prevailed 22-7 in game one.
Game Two: Pitt-Greensburg 6, Clark 2
  • Doran and Sullivan each reached base in the top of the first, but were left on before the Panthers plated two runs in the bottom of the first.
  • Junior Michael Soares belted a homer to right center to cut the deficit to one and after Pitt.-Greensburg scored another run, graduate student Benjamin Spencer tossed two scoreless innings as Clark trailed 3-1 entering the fifth.
  • First-year Cole Camara stole home in the top of the fifth to bring the Cougars within a run at 3-2 before Laubach belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth in the final at-bat of the game to give the Panthers the win.
What's Next
Clark will close out their spring break trip with a contest against Bluffton tomorrow afternoon beginning at 3:30 p.m.
