Offense Explodes for 21 Runs in 21-14 Victory Over Bluffton in Spring Break Finale

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Clark University baseball team (6-2) closed out their spring break trip with a convincing 21-14 victory over Bluffton (1-5) on Thursday night from Lake Myrtle Park.

Game One: Clark 21, Bluffton 14
  • The Cougars jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as junior Dom Mariani roped a two-RBI triple to right center and then scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first.
  • Bluffton attacked right back with three runs in the bottom of the first before Clark's offense exploded for five runs in the top of the second as senior Ryan Bonja, graduate student Ryan Caulfield, and junior Michael Soares each drove in runs as the Cougars held an 8-3 lead.
  • Senior Connor Schmautz pitched a scoreless second before the Cougars added five more runs in the top of the third as sophomore Michael Salzillo, Caulfield, and Mariani all scored off errors and Mariani drove in two runs to push the edge to 13-3.
  • Bluffton fought back to pull within one at 13-12 in the bottom of the fifth with nine unanswered runs before Salzillo belted a homer to left field to push Clark ahead 14-12.
  • The scarlet and white plated four runs in the top of the seventh as first-year Brad Andreola scored off an error, junior Brayden Hollinrake, junior Alfonso Jalil, and senior Carter Doran all drove in runs to give the Cougars an 18-13 edge.
  • Hollinrake, graduate student Billy Sullivan, and Caulfield all tallied RBI's over the final three innings of the game and junior Tommy Flaherty closed out the game on the bump as Clark won 21-14.
Inside the Stats
  • Sullivan and Caulfield each tallied four hits, with Caulfield also scoring five runs and driving in three, and Sullivan scored three times.
  • Mariani recorded a team-high four RBI's and scored four runs.
  • Doran and Salzillo also tallied two hits, three runs, and an RBI.
  • Eight Cougars recorded a hit in the contest.
  • First-year Robby Roth earned the win on the mound as he pitched 1.1 innings and struck out two batters.
  • Flaherty closed out the contest with 3.0 innings pitched and struck out five.
What's Next
The Cougars will return to the field on Thursday afternoon when they welcome Amherst to Granger Field for their first home game of the season beginning at 4:00 p.m.
